Green Space

This landscape painting of grass in both sun and shadow was very satisfying to work on. It was inspired by a moment outside the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam one autumn where the grass at the Museum Promenade was split - part of it in sunlight, part of it in the shade and all of it demanding my attention. 

The artwork is made up of very few colours - really just green, blue and brown - and because of this there was a long moment in it the painting stage where it seemed utterly flat. Working on the contrast in the greens and the gradient of blues in the sky really pulled it out the rut and brought it to life.
